Crystal Ball
Kayla McMahon
Colored pencil
The piece I am sharing with you today is called Crystal Ball. The reason why I decided to make a crystal ball was I always found them interesting and very pretty. Once I figured out what medium I wanted, I thought a crystal ball would look very nice. My theme is Halloween, and I thought of Scooby doo while choosing what to draw. The reason I chose Halloween for my theme, was because I enjoy creating creepy things and find them very fascinating. So, what better theme to do then Halloween?
The technique for drawing my creation was I would lightly sketch my original thoughts so if I didn’t like it, I could go over it. Then, I would do layers of color so I could make the different shades of purple and black blend together to look even, and not so choppy. The only thing I need for a reference photo was the fortune cards. I used the sun and the moon because I thought that it was very simple and matched the whole picture.
The medium I decided to use was colored pencil. I don’t usually do colored pencil but, I thought the picture would look good with a lot of color. My first element I decided to use was color, because I didn’t want a bland and boring picture. I wanted to emphasize the brightness factor so I went all out. My second element is value. You can see the lightness and darkness tones all around the picture, but mostly in the ball itself. The first principle I decided to do is variety, which is diversity in contrast, and shapes. I made certain objects different sizes to fit the picture and look more real. The second principal I decided to do was movement, I decided to choose this because you can see the movement and the flow of the drawing. My artistic style I would say is realism, and surrealism. I don’t like the cartoony look of things. I like to make things look as real I can, but with a little twist so it's not just bland and boring.

Pennywise: The Dancing Clown
Today I will be telling you about my art work. This is my second creation to go with my theme of Halloween.
It calls himself " Pennywise". Obviously if you have seen the movie, he is not just an average killer clown like every other movie. It is a little more complex than that. Pennywise or "It" is supposed to be a representation of fear. That is why you cannot kill It. Fear never dies it just weakens. I chose it because I love scary things. What better thing to draw, then fear itself.
My process was I first did a very light sketch, hardly even an outline of the facial structure. Then I began painting the shape of his face, but then later putting more detail in.
Now I will be telling you two elements, and two principles I decided to use.
I used color because without it, the picture wouldn’t be as defined, like his red lips and orange hair. My next element is texture. You can feel where the lighter coat of paint is vs where I put more layers because I wanted to mix the colors. My first principle I chose to do was proportion. I chose this because my shapes are very proportionate with the reference picture I used. My second principle is unity, because my colors all flow together and make a sense of harmony.

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggoire
Roman Pen & Ink Architecture
The Italian architectural building that I chose to draw in pen & ink was the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome. The construction of the church began in 435 AD, and ended in 1743. The building stands 246 feet tall. Firdinando Fuga was the architect that designed this marvelous building.
I picked this building because it is so different from the kind of buildings from its time. I liked the round towers and its architectural detail. I picked it because I thought it would be a challenge to draw, and it would be interesting to see how close I could make the resemblance. I just copied off of the picture of the original building. I decided that I wasn't going to use the boxes because I thought it was too difficult, and I wanted to add my own twist, and do it from my own perspective. The elements that I chose are line and space. Line through the way I drew the hatching. Space, because you use space to make it look realistic and proportionate to the picture you looked at. The principals I used were unity and movement. Unity was used through the way I had the building in touch with the ground Movement, because you want it to look real.
