Unexpected Gift
Pencil For my theme this year I chose to do a circus or carnival theme. My pencil project is named “Unexpected Gift”. Depicted in my pencil project are two vintage dressed clowns. The clown on the right is offering a wilted flower to the right clown, who seems to be deciding if he can accept the gift. Clowns are known to be jokesters, so the flower could perhaps be a fake, and upon taking it could result in a soaked shirt. The pencils used were graphite. I used most of the pencils from 6H to 5B, 6H being the hardest and the lightest pencil and 5B being the softest and the darkest. The clowns’ clothing is colored to have the look of satin and in some parts velvet. The face paint on the clowns was common in the mid-20th century. The paper received its faded texture and color from coffee-washing it. this gives the entire project a more vintage feel. |

Balancing Act
Watercolor My theme this year is called “Circus.” I chose this theme for its many options and flexibility for creativity. Painting with watercolor is done with a powdery paint that turns liquid when water is added. Watercolors are easy to layer which usually produces very colorful scenes. My watercolor project is very colorful and incorporates many elements and principles of art. My watercolor project is called “Balancing Act.” The elephant has an Arabian feel in its décor. He balances on a ball while helping balance a baby elephant on a unicycle. On the elephant's back is a circus tent, and surrounding the elephant are balloons. This project would be classified as surreal. Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. The surreal aspect about this piece is that the elephant I suspended in the sky. There are two elements in this piece. On is line, which I used in the strings of the balloon. The other element is form. The ball the elephant balances on is a good example of this. Two principles I chose to incorporate were balance and emphasis. The balance in the piece is that the elephant is slightly off put and to the right. To balance this out I outstretched the elephant’s nose and added more balloons on the left side. I used emphasis because the main point of the entire piece is the elephant. There is much going on there so it makes sense that would be my emphasis. I chose to do this project since one of the first things I think about when I think circus is an elephant. Elephants, balloons, and tents are three very universal signs of a circus, so putting these things in my project really conveyed what my theme meant. |
