For over 11 years, every November, a local Empty Bowls event is held to raise awareness and funds to fight hunger right here in Grand Forks. The event is open to anyone who would like to contribute a donation, and includes a meal of soup and bread in a take-home ceramic bowl created and served by volunteers, as well as a silent auction, entertainment, and education about local hunger. Founded by a Michigan art teacher in 1990, Empty Bowls started as a way for artists and art students to make a difference in worldwide hunger: Students made ceramic bowls, and the finished products were used as individual serving pieces for a fundraising meal of soup and bread. The next year, the concept of Empty Bowls was developed and has since spread worldwide to raise awareness of international hunger. This month-long community event benefits St. Joseph’s Food Pantry and Free Summer Lunch Program for children in the community – both of which are a part of a significantly growing demographic in the Grand Cities.
