The theme I chose for my Independent Art Exhibition is Botanicals and Birds. I chose this theme because I enjoy nature and animals. To me, birds and botanicals can be very beautiful. Botanicals are derived from plants, or relating to plants and botany. The projects I create will show an array of botanicals and birds..
Tropicana |
CocoNUTS!! |
Project one was created in the medium of pen and ink. It is two pieces, one of a palm tree, and one of a toucan in the Tropics. The two elements I used were line and texture. Line is shown by the marks going across the trees in both pieces. Texture is shown by the markings in the trees to make the bark look realistic, and the feathers on the toucan. The two principles I used were movement and unity. Movement is the path your eyes take when you follow the trees going upward. Unity is demonstrated by how the two pieces complete each other making the project whole.
Falling for Fall
Project two was created in the medium of ceramic and acrylic paints. My project is a canvas painted in black and white, and ceramic leaves glued to it to form a tree. The first element I used was form, which is a three-dimensional shape and is shown by the leaves glued to the canvas. The second element I used was space, which is the area between the leaves. The two principles I used were repetition, which works with the pattern to make the artwork seem active and is shown by all the leaves; I used proportion which is a feeling of unity when all parts relate with one another, which is shown by how the leaves are distributed on the canvas.
Winter Nights
Project three was created in the medium of oil paints. It is of two cardinals sitting on a tree branch during winter. The two principles I used were emphasis and rhythm. Emphasis is a part of the design that catches the viewers' attention. That is demonstrated by the red birds and berries, because it is the only color that isn't white, grey, or black. Rhythm is when one or more elements of a design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. That is demonstrated by how the branch that the two birds are sitting on moves outwards. The two elements I used were shape and value. Shape is a closed line, and that is demonstrated by the birds. Value refers to dark and light, which is shown by the background on the canvas.
Lotus
Project four was created in the medium of pencil. I chose to draw a lotus flower because it reminds me of spring. The two elements I used were color and value. Color is light reflected off of objects. That is shown by the dark and light values in my project. Value refers to dark and light. That is shown by the light reflected onto the flower. The two principles I used were balance and pattern. Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. That is shown by the stem of the flower holding up the petals. Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the artwork. That is shown by all the petals on the flower.
Cobalt
Project five was created in the medium of colored pencil. I chose to create a bluebird for my project. The two elements I used were texture and shape. Texture is surface quality that can be seen and felt, which is shown by the thin, colored feathers. Shape is a closed line, which is shown by the bird as a whole. The two principles I used were variety and movement. Variety is the use of several elements to hold the viewer's attention, which is shown by the colors and the texture. Movement is the path the viewer's eye takes, and that is shown by the feathers going downwards.
Sweet Summer Time
Project six was created in the medium of watercolor. I painted two peonies and a hummingbird. The two elements I used were space and color. Space is the area between and around objects, which is shown by the area between the flowers and the hummingbird. Color is light reflected off of objects, which is shown by the pink petals, green leaves, and blue hummingbird. The two principles I used were pattern and unity. Pattern is the repeating of an object, which is shown by the repeating of the flower petals. Unity is a feeling of harmony between all parts of the artwork making it seem complete, which is shown by the hummingbird associating with the flowers.
