SCI-FI
I chose the theme of Sci-fi for the pieces of my Independent Art Exhibition. I picked this theme because I love outer space, and find the idea of living and traveling in space exciting and interesting. I wanted to show different ideas about space and the future from different points in history.
Mindreaders
My first project is a pencil drawing of two boys who have created a “mind reading machine.” I chose this picture because it reminds me of the old, retro style of style of drawing. I have always liked this style because it shows a wacky and optimistic view of the future. The principles of art that used in this project were balance and variety. I used balance by giving the shorter boy a taller helmet and the taller boy a shorter helmet. I used variety by using different shapes and shades throughout the picture to make it interesting to look at. The elements I used were shape and space. I used shape because the project is two dimensional and flat, and I used space by using lighter and darker to create a sense of depth in the pi
Robot
For my second project, I used clay to create a 3D robot. I based my figure off of “Robby the Robot” from the classic sci-fi movie Forbidden planet, because I like how large and clunky the design for this robot is. The main principles of art that I used were balance and unity. I used balance when making the different body parts for the robot so that it could stand on its own, and I used unity by using the same style and colors throughout the entire piece. I also used the elements of form and texture by having a 3D piece, and by giving the robot a smooth and shiny look and feel.
Stargazer
For my third project, I used oil paints as my medium. It depicts an Alien girl looking at the night sky. I called it stargazer because I like the idea that if there is alien life that we haven’t discovered yet, they would be just as interested and mesmerized by the night sky as humans are. The main principles of art that I used in this piece were emphasis and movement. I used emphasis by contrasting the bright colors of the person in the foreground with the plain black and white of the background. I used movement by using the shape of the subject’s hair to direct people’s eyes from the top of the painting to the bottom. I also used the elements of color and value. I used bright green color to create contrast with the rest of the picture, which is dark, and used value to make sure that the black outfit didn’t blend in with the black background.
Quilt-osaurus Rex
I made my fourth project using fibers. It is a quilt inspired by the famous sci-fi movie Jurassic Park. The movie is about what might happen if we brought back the dinosaurs in our modern world, so the fabric I used has dinosaur related patterns. I used the principles of pattern and unity in this piece. The squares of fabric follow a repeating pattern throughout the whole piece. The colors of the squares match the color of the felt on the back of the quilt to create a feeling of unity throughout the whole piece. The elements I used were line and texture. The thread is a line that is present throughout the entire piece. My quilt uses many different textured fabrics, and I used the dark green fabric with the scaly texture to add the dinosaur theme.
Taken
My fifth project is a piece I made using colored pencils. The style of the piece is inspired by pop art. The picture features a UFO flying over a mountain, surrounded by clouds. It is full of lots of bright, fun colors. The two elements of art that I used are color and space. I used bright colors with high intensity to give the piece its “pop art” feel, and I used space in the background of the piece by using the sky and the clouds to create a sense of depth in the picture. I also used the principles of unity and pattern. The same style of art was used throughout the piece to establish a feeling of unity throughout the piece. I used a pattern of repeating colors to create a frame around the piece.
A New Perspective
I used watercolor paints to create my sixth piece. It is a picture of an astronaut watching the sun rise over Earth from space. This is a point of view that very few people get to experience first hand. The two principles of art that I used are emphasis and repetition. I used emphasis by making the astronaut light to contrast the dark background so your eye is drawn to him when you look at the picture. I used repetition in the stars. They are an element that appears throughout the piece. The elements of art that I used are shape and value. I used shape in objects like the circular planets and stars, and I used value on the astronaut’s helmet by having space be the darkest black, Earth a lighter blue-gray, and the moon the lightest gray.
